Hands For Health Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is the gentle art of healing through therapeutic massaging of the feet. It is a science based upon physiological and neurological studies. The art of reflexology has been known to man for many thousands of years. The oldest recorded documentation of reflexology dates back to the tomb of an ancient Egyptian physician named ‘Ankmahor’. The art of foot and hand massage was also practised by the Babylonian, Chinese and North American cultures.

Dr. William Fitzgerald is commonly known as the founder of ‘Reflex Zone Therapy’; as an American ears, nose, and throat surgeon he practised in hospitals in Vienna and London in the late 1800’s. The main principle behind ‘Reflex Zone Therapy’ is that there are ten zones of the body with corresponding reflex areas found in the hands, thus mapping Hand Reflexology, as we know it today. In the 1930’s, Eunice Ingham, a therapist working for Dr Joe Shelby Riley, worked further developing and refining zone theory into what is now known as ‘Foot Reflexology’ today. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot, mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding area of the body.

These reflex areas are found on all parts of the hands and they correspond to organs, glands and structures of the body. The hands can be seen as a   mirror of the body the right hand representing the right side of the body and the left hand representing the left.
